My name is Narelle and I am one of the Play Therapists at POP.
I am originally from Australia but now live in Buckinghamshire with my son and my dog.
“If I was any toy in the playroom, I would like to be a sparkly gem symbol in the sand tray. They get hidden and then found and often feature in all sorts of worlds such as beach scenes, jungles or under water.”
My Play Therapy Journey
I’ve always been interested in helping people. I did a degree in Psychology in Australia and then worked with teenagers involved in youth offending, which was always busy but really rewarding to see people make positive changes. After moving to the UK, I also worked in youth offending teams in London which was also very satisfying but I was became aware of the limited support children had received when they were younger, before they were involved in crime.
Then I worked in Family Group Conferencing which is a great way to empower families who are working with Children’s Services. I realised I really enjoyed working with the children, exploring their views and having their voices heard, so I looked into how I could help make a difference to children who had really experienced some difficult challenges in their lives as early as possible so they could move forwards and live their best possible life.
“I think the magic of Play Therapy is that it is such a unique journey for each child. I feel it is the little moments which make a big difference, such as a child who was quiet, reserved and didn’t like any attention so would avoid situations where she might be looked at. But then having built up her confidence, she then would speak up in class and even walk through a busy school hall.”
My favourite item in the play room is the sand tray- there are so many amazing ways children play in the sand. They can show you a story or express themselves, it feels grounding, sensory and offers so many possibilities.
I love being a part of POP Therapy as it is a like minded team of people who support each other to help children.
If I could give parents or professionals one piece of advice about play and connection it would be to spend some time where you join your child in their play, let them lead and see where they play goes. Don’t worry about feeling self conscious, your child will love you joining them!
